Getting Started

Got a question? Here's where to find what you need.

It is entirely your choice to wear a pair or briefs or be naked. We do provide specially designed disposable underwear for clients who wear that do not impede the flowing actions of a Hawaiian massage.  Through each of our massages, whether you wear underwear or not, your modesty is upheld by draping towels and sarongs over private areas.  Additional draping is always available to be used at your request.  If you review our demonstration video, you will observe that a sarong always covers the private area throughout the massage along with a modesty towel. Our massages are safe and uphold your modesty when no underwear is worn to ensure your upper legs, thighs, buttocks, hips and lower back are easily accessible throughout your massage.  If you have any concerns for modesty, please convey them on the consent form we provide prior to all massages.

We pride ourselves upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ensuring your massage is tailored specially for your unique needs. Our consent form takes just a couple of minutes to fill in and covers COVID-19 precautions, biographical details, any specific body areas you wish to focus on or avoid. All gathered information is confidentially maintained to ensure your privacy.

If this is your first time for a Hawaiian style massage, have a look at the short demonstration videos on our website of Ruby receiving a massage from Stewart. You will see examples of the flowing stroke actions and application of oil, hot stones and placement of a towel and sarong. Before your massage, we suggest:

  • Have a warm shower or bath
  • Be well-hydrated
  • Avoid eating heavy foods a few hours before your massage
  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to change
If you have any questions about preparing for your massage, then give us a ring – we love to chat!

At Amoeba Massage, we offer you the choice of having a Kahuna massage. This is a dynamic, full body massage which is deeply relaxing and generally takes 90 minutes. The complexity of the rhythmic strokes allows the whole body to be massaged at once. Coconut oil allows the therapist’s arms to glide over and under the body. The sensations you will experience are associated with blissfulness, tranquillity and highly mediative.

During a Kahuna massage, you will experience having your body’s cellular memory being awakened, creating shifts of energy and where the outcome is a reconnection to wholeness – freed from aches, daily stress and replaced by joy, happiness and bliss.

Kahuna is idealif you are feeling physically, emotionally or mentally tired. It’s also a very good treatment during times of significant stress in your life, or if you are seeking to enter a state of deep mediation prompting creativity and original thought.

A LomiLomi massage begins with a period of stillness between therapist and recipient, sometimes with the therapist's hands resting lightly on the recipient's back. During this moment of stillness, a blessing or prayer may be exchanged. Afterwards, the therapist applies oil and works using rhythmic strokes to release and shift tensions. There is no set format for the massage itself, so no two LomiLomi massages are the same. The treatment may be slow and relaxing or faster and more invigorating, depending on how your body responds. Sometimes the therapist will massage two different parts of your body simultaneously - this is to stop your brain from focusing on any one area and therefore helps to aid relaxation. During a LomiLomi massage, full-body and under-body strokes are used, along with lightly stretching your limbs and carefully rotating your joints. These techniques free up your energy flow, releasing endorphins.

Don't be surprised if your therapist hums at various points during your massage. Humming amplifies and vibrates energy, promoting the release of blockages within the body. Some therapists will even display dance techniques and hula movements during a LomiLomi massage.

The main distinction between a Kahuna Massage and LomiLomi massage is that LomiLomi tends to be a softer, gentler experience with using deep pressure. This is the ideal massage if you want a gentle style of massage and to focus on a couple of specific regions of the body

Basalt river stones the sense of a tennis ball may be used when having a massage. At Amoeba Massage, we have a dedicated stone heater which keeps the stones at a warm temperature. The heat within the stones helps to relax the body and mind. Hot stones can be placed on top of a towel, thus allowing the heat to gradually seep into the body without causing distress to the skin. Slightly cooler stones are held in the therapist’s hands and used as part of a dynamic massage flow. During the massage, stones are also placed in the hands of the person receiving the massage creating a unique relaxing sensation alleviating stress and pain. Have a look at our demonstration video of how hot stones are used during a massage.

For thousands of years, massage – known as LomiLomi - has been part of the culture of Polynesian islands including Tahiti, French Polynesia, Samoa and most prominently, Hawaii.
Practitioners in remote villages apply their skills in urban locations combine to use their palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, feet and hot stones performing unique styles of massage that has become very popular in many regions of the world. Lomilomi practices may vary amongst families living in the same village. There remains a strong spiritual practice where spiritual healers, Kahuna and Shaman use traditional LomiLomi to exorcise spirits (Aiku/Aitu) from possessed individuals.

Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in four contexts:
  1. As a healing practice of native healers -- kahuna lāʻaulapaʻau (healers) and kahuna hāhā (diagnosticians)
  2. As a luxury and an aid to digestion, especially by the ruling chiefs (aliʻi)
  3. As restorative massage within the family
  4. By ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts)
Although the term kahuna lomilomi is widely used in contemporary writings, traditionally the people who performed lomilomi were called ka poʻe lomilomi (the massage people) or kanaka lomi (massage person). A related term, kauka lomilomi, was coined in 1920 to describe osteopathic physicians. Kauka is the Hawaiian wordfor doctor.
Future practitioners were selected in childhood, around age 5, based on birth signs such as weather events, birthmarks (especially on the head), and kind behaviour. After a decade or more of study, they would begin to practice but mastery was believed to take a lifetime.
LomiLomi continues to evolve like other traditional styles of massage and has become very popular promoting improved health, restoration and a sense of emotional renewal.
